Prepare For Surgery

The time before an upcoming operation can be very stressful. Knowing that you have surgery in your future can be upsetting. How can you use the time to your benefit and prepare for something that can be very minor or life-threatening?

A healthy diet is one way to prepare. You want your body to be in the best possible condition and a healthy diet is essential. Cut the foods and liquids that are not contributing to health and start adding good fruits and vegetables, whole-grain products, small quantities of meats or meat substitutes and dairy products. Of course check with your doctor for diet restrictions.

Optimize your health by getting exercise. Again, check with your doctor. Make sure that he/she has no objection to the type of exercise you have chosen.

Lose weight if necessary to make the impact of the surgery less draining on your body. Your heart and all of your internal organs were not meant to support a lot of extra weight. Carrying extra pounds is hard enough during normal times, it can be very detrimental during stressful times.

Read up on what will be involved, if you think that the information will benefit you. Many people feel empowered by the knowledge of what is involved and what they will be experiencing. Ask questions. If you know that any extra information would only upset you, then rely on what your doctor tells you.

Learn some relaxation techniques. This is very beneficial to your body and your mind. It will help you face the situation with less stress and your body responds better and repairs faster in the absence of stress. Deep breathing, meditation and self-hypnosis are good methods of stress reduction.

Be positive about the upcoming procedure. People who look at the positive side of things actually live longer. This is within your power to do. You have the choice every day of looking at the bright side and making the best of the situation, or looking at the dark side and making the situation worse.

Learn to forgive. Holding on to past hurts, disappointments or less-than-perfect situations serves no purpose. Let them go. Consider that the person who hurt you is not being harmed by the grudge, YOU are. By forgiving you can finally get past that incident and be free.

These methods will help to prepare your mind, body and spirit for a challenging time. Allow yourself the pleasure of using them and getting through the surgery with minimal disturbance.
